Dissent North and South--Civil War Program Tuesday, March 25

(March 19, 2014)  Civil War battles and campaigns are studied in great detail and discussed endlessly.  But what about the home front?  Did dissension, North or South, undermine the war effort?  Not everyone at home believed that the war was just or even that it could be won.  Ohio’s own Clement Vallandigham ran for Governor as a peace candidate.  Join us at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 25, as Professor Jay Case from Malone University sheds light on this little-known aspect of the Civil War.   This program is the final event of a series that the  Library scheduled to complement the traveling exhibit Ohio and the Civil War: 150 Years Later hosted by the library through March 26.

Brown Water, Black Ships: The Civil War on the Mississippi, Tuesday, 7:00 pm

(March 16, 2014) It was in the Western campaigns, many historians argue, that the Civil War was truly won.  A major part of the Union military effort there was the unlikely, ungainly, but powerful fleet of river warships that helped Grant, Sherman and others win victories and fame.Join us this Tuesday, March 18, as William F.B. Vodrey presents an exciting talk about the Civil War on the Mississippi that will interest all ages.  This program is one of several the  Library has scheduled to complement the traveling exhibit Ohio and the Civil War: 150 Years Later hosted by the library through March 26.

Live Civil War Music

(March 6, 2014) Join us Tuesday, March 11, at 7:00 pm for an evening of song and history.  Steve Ball will perform Civil War music on vintage guitars from original sheet music.  It's a fun and informative program for the whole family.  This performance accompanies the Ohio and the Civil War exhibit on display at the library now through March 26.  The program is free and open to all.

Electing a President in Wartime--Tuesday, March 4

(February 26, 2014) The presidential election of 1864 was fraught with peril for the Union cause.   The North was weary of war and the Union armies seemed mired in stalemate with their Confederate foes.  Lincoln’s Democratic opponent was the popular General George McClellan, and the President was faced with a revolt inside his own party.  Join us Tuesday, March  4, at 7:00 pm, as Professor Leslie Heaphy presents an interesting and informative talk on this often-overlooked facet of Civil War history.  This program is one of several the  Library has scheduled to complement the traveling exhibit Ohio and the Civil War: 150 Years Later hosted by the library through March 26.
